Teaching my son to stand up for what's right

Found out today my 10yo stood up to some older kids who were making fun of another kid for being different. He got in trouble at school for talking back to them but honestly I was so proud. Told him that doing whats right is more important than staying quiet just to fit in. How do you guys balance teaching them confidence and standing firm in their values without making them targets? Its a tough age.
