Best smoker for a beginner

Been wanting to get into smoking meats for a while now. Got some tax refund money burning a hole in my pocket. Looking at the Weber Smokey Mountain vs some of the Traeger pellet smokers. Any of you guys have experience with either? Mostly just want to do brisket and ribs on weekends. Don't want to spend a ton but also don't want garbage quality.

What's your budget looking like? That'll make a big difference. Also pro tip: buy the smoker but invest heavily in a good meat thermometer. Changed my whole game.

Offset or pellet? That's the real question. I started with a cheap vertical smoker from Lowes and learned a ton before upgrading. Best decision was spending time understanding the basics rather than dropping cash on something fancy right away.

Nice! Tax refund smoker money is the best kind. I'd say start with a Weber kettle if you want to learn charcoal, or go Traeger if you want the convenience factor. Either way you're gonna make some amazing food.
