Looking for something the whole family can enjoy. My oldest is 8 and my youngest is 5. They're both into Mario Kart but I want something new. Thinking maybe Mario Party or Minecraft? Open to suggestions. Just need something that won't drive me completely insane.
Mario Kart is the MVP in our house for that age gap. The 5 year old can button mash and still have fun, and your 8 year old can actually develop some skill. Plus it's chaos but manageable chaos, you know?
Animal Crossing is low-stress and you can all just vibe together. My kids love decorating their islands and showing each other what they've done. No competition, just fun.
We've had great luck with Mario Party. It's simple enough that my youngest gets it but strategic enough to keep my oldest engaged. Fair warning though - prepare for some heated moments over game outcomes.
Minecraft is perfect for that age range. My 7 and 9 year old have been into it for years and I can sit down with them without it feeling like I'm making a sacrifice. Plus they actually want to show you stuff they built.
Mario Kart is the way. An 8 and 5 year old can both play, it's simple enough for the younger one but fun for everyone, and it doesn't take forever. Races are quick so nobody gets bored.
We do Stardew Valley and my youngest just loves watching even if she can't quite play it all yet. My oldest helps guide the farming and it's become our thing. Something about cooperative games works better than competitive with that age gap.

Minecraft creative mode changed everything for us. Both my kids can play at their own level and it actually sparks their imagination instead of just being a screen zombie thing. We play together on the same world.
Can't go wrong with the new Mario games either. Super Mario Bros Wonder is fantastic for mixed ages.
