Spent last weekend building a workbench from 2x4s and plywood. Cost about $80 total and it's not fancy but it's MINE and the kids can't destroy my tools anymore. Currently working on a birdhouse for my daughter's school project. Honestly might prefer garage time to family game night at this point lol. Anyone else have a "shop" as their happy place?
$80 is insane. What did you use for the top? Also "kids can't destroy my tools anymore" is such a specific pain point that I felt it spiritually.
Making a birdhouse is wholesome content. That's still parenting engagement even if you prefer it to game night lol. The fact that you're building something FOR her is the win.
The garage time obsession is real but also maybe build in actual family time still? Not judging, just... been that guy and it's easy to drift.
Replying to the 'prefer garage time' - just be real with yourself that you need that space and that's okay. But maybe make sure you're actually present for actual family stuff too. Balance.

The garage sanctuary is real. My workbench became my version of having a hobby again which I didn't know I was missing. Fair warning though: garage time eating into family stuff is a slippery slope. Maybe set some intentional balance before it becomes an every-night thing?
Building a birdhouse is honestly a perfect gateway to actual dad projects. Your daughter's gonna remember that way more than another game night anyway. Just saying the garage thing might not be selfish if it also means cool memories for them.
