Cooking ribs this weekend, need advice

Been planning this all week. Got a new dry rub recipe from my coworker but I'm torn between smoking them low and slow vs the oven method since we're supposed to get rain. Has anyone had success with either? Looking for that fall-off-the-bone situation. Also what kind of wood is best for a smoker that isn't mesquite?
