Does anyone actually use those educational apps or is it all just screen time?

Debating whether to spend money on Duolingo Plus for my 8yo or if I'm just kidding myself that he'll actually practice Spanish. He's been on the free version for 3 weeks and has done like 4 lessons total. Is this just another app I'll pay for and he'll ignore or do some of your kids actually stick with this stuff?
