Had to explain why the neighbors' hot tub situation isn't our business

So my 10-year-old comes home asking why the Hendersons are filling their hot tub in the backyard at 9pm. I guess he was being nosy looking over the fence. Had this whole conversation about privacy and minding our own business while internally wondering the same thing. Ended up being a surprisingly good teachable moment but man, kids ask the questions you don't want answered.

This is the age where they start asking questions about why things are different at other people's houses. My 9yo asked why our neighbors have a swimming pool and we don't. I just explained we have different priorities for our money.

Haha I appreciate that you're trying to teach him about respecting people's privacy. That's actually a good instinct. But yeah a 10yo probably doesn't need the full rundown of what the hot tub situation means.

What did he actually ask though? Like was he asking why they're building it or asking something more specific? The answer changes based on what he's really wondering about.

The neighbors having a hot tub is just a fact of life and honestly not worth explaining to a 10yo. I probably would've just said something like 'they like to relax' and moved on.
