My 12yo thinks he's too old for family game night now

This one stings a little ngl. We've done board game nights since he was like 7 and he always loved it. Last Friday I suggested it and he literally rolled his eyes and said 'that's so cringe' and went upstairs. His sister (10) still wants to play but it's not the same without him there. Idk, maybe this is just a phase? Anyone been through this? Does he eventually come back around or am I entering the era where my kid thinks spending time with me is uncool?

I'd give him a little space but keep the game nights going. He might surprise you and come back around, and if he doesn't now, he'll probably appreciate it more in a few years when he's nostalgic.

Try switching up the games to something less 'baby' feeling. We moved from Candy Land type stuff to actual strategy games and my 11 year old is way more interested now.

Have you asked what he WOULD want to do instead? Maybe there's a compromise like a different kind of game or activity that feels more grown up to him.

That's the worst part about them getting older. The stuff they loved becomes 'uncool' overnight. I feel this in my bones.

This hits different. My oldest said the same thing last year and I was genuinely hurt. But then he actually came to game night and had fun anyway. Don't give up on it yet.
