Unpopular opinion: kids' birthday parties are out of control

Why are we spending $300+ on a 5-year-old's party? I'm not judging people who do it but we just did Chuck E Cheese and it was $40 and the kids had a blast.

My daughter asked for a "princess party" and I told her she could pick 3 friends and we'd have cake at home. She was literally just as happy.

Feels like there's so much pressure to do these elaborate things. Anyone else keeping it simple?

The thing nobody tells you is that kids honestly don't remember the $300 party but they remember hanging out with their friends. We went simple and my son talks about it more than kids with the fancy venues.

The social pressure for kids parties is insane though. Every other parent is posting pictures of these elaborate setups and suddenly you feel like your park party is like you don't care or something. It's all manufactured.

I think the real unpopular opinion is that five year olds need entertainment that elaborate to have fun. A few friends, cake, and some games in the backyard and they're happy for hours.

What did you end up doing for the party? I feel like there's a sweet spot between backyard barbecue and renting out a whole venue where you can still have fun without dropping a car payment.

I'm with you on this one. We did a park day birthday party for my daughter's 5th and everyone had a blast for literally the cost of some pizza and decorations. Kids don't need bounce houses and character appearances.
