Weekend project turned into a nightmare

Decided to build a shelf in the garage yesterday. Simple right? Wrong. Studs weren't where they were supposed to be, drill bit snapped, and now there's a hole in the drywall I have to explain to my wife. It's still just leaning against the wall. At least the wood looks nice. Anyone else have projects that just spiral?
