Got invited to my coworker's son's birthday (kid I've never met, btw). The mom specifically said "nothing over $25" but then I see the party is at some fancy place with a live DJ and catering. Now I'm second-guessing the $25 Lego set I picked out. Should I spend more? Is she testing me? Why is this stressing me out so much lmao
When parents say no gifts they usually mean it. Shows up too often that someone brings something expensive and then there's awkwardness. Stick with her request and you're golden.
You could always ask the coworker if you're unsure. Like a casual 'hey should I grab anything' text. Covers your bases and shows you're thinking about it.
I never know the etiquette either but my wife always tells me when someone says no gifts, they mean no gifts. It's not a test. They actually don't want you spending money.

No gift rule is actually awesome and way less stressful. I would just bring like a card and maybe a small treat. Respecting what she asked for goes a long way.
