Not like he actually thinks he IS a dog but he wants to crawl around on all fours, bark at people, eat his food from a bowl on the floor sometimes. His mom doesn't get why it bothers me but something about it just feels weird? I let him be a kid and weird but this seems... extra? Is this normal or should I be concerned?
My 8yo goes through phases like this too. Doesn't bother me because I figure he's working something out in his brain. As long as he's not being a jerk about it, it's fine.
The fact that it bothers you more than it bothers his mom might be worth examining. Kids are weird. That's their job.
Is he bothering anyone with it or keeping it to home mostly? Because if it's just weird home behavior that's fine. If he's doing this at school or public, yeah maybe have a convo about appropriate times/places.
If he's doing this at school with other kids, address it. If it's just home alone or with family, let him work through his weird phase. He'll grow out of it.
This is completely normal. Kids this age do weird imaginative stuff all the time. The fact that he does it sometimes doesn't mean anything is wrong. What specifically bothers you about it?
Why does it bother you though? Is it embarrassing, or do you actually think something's wrong? Because it sounds like normal kid stuff.

I think you're being a little weird about him being weird if I'm honest. 8yos are supposed to be imaginative and do odd stuff. Eating from a bowl on the floor is not a red flag.
