Why is grass so expensive to maintain

Just got my lawn care estimate for the season and I nearly fell off my chair. For that price I could be paying someone to come cut my yard weekly. Is anyone actually treating their lawn properly or are we all just out here letting it do whatever it wants? I'm leaning toward the second option.
