Why is my 10 year old suddenly interested in cooking?

He watched some baking show and now he wants to make everything from scratch. Which is awesome I guess but also means my kitchen is constantly a disaster. Made sourdough with him last week and it actually turned out decent. Weird phase or should I encourage this?

This is such a cool age for it. My boy's the same way right now. I'd say lean into it, maybe grab a simple cookbook made for kids and let him pick a recipe each week. The baking show obsession will pay off in homemade cookies for you.

Get him a kitchen scale if he doesn't have one already. Baking is basically science which will feed into the interest even more. And yeah, it's messy but totally worth it.

Do it. My daughter started the same way and now she actually helps with dinner prep instead of us begging her. Plus you get delicious stuff out of it. Just set expectations about the mess.

Pro tip: line your counters with parchment paper before he starts. Makes cleanup like 10x easier and he doesn't feel bad about making a mess while learning.
