Being a leader means making the hard calls nobody else wants to make
Had to let someone go from my team at work yesterday. Guy was a good person but he wasn't pulling his weight and it was affecting everyone else. I did it respectfully and gave him a fair severance but man it weighs on you. Been thinking about it all day. This is what leadership actually is though. It's not the fun stuff, it's not the praise. It's making decisions that are right for the people depending on you even when they're uncomfortable. My grandfather used to say that a man's character is defined by how he handles the moments nobody is watching. This one felt like that.
That's a tough one man. Those decisions keep you up at night, but you're right that it affects the whole team when someone isn't pulling their weight. Sounds like you handled it with integrity, which is what matters.
