Being the leader of your household without being a tyrant

There's a lot of talk these days about what it means to be the head of the family and I think a lot of guys are getting it wrong. Being a leader doesn't mean you get to be lazy or demanding. It means you make the hard decisions, you protect your family, and you set the example. My wife respects my authority because I've earned it by showing up every single day and putting their needs before mine. That's what real leadership looks like. What's your approach to this?

Being a leader doesn't mean being authoritarian. It means making the hard calls, standing by your principles, and showing your kids what integrity looks like day in and day out. That's the real influence.

The tricky part is balancing being the leader with actually listening to your kids and letting them have input. My ex and I work better now as co-parents when we both lead without dominating.

This is such an important distinction. I think leadership in the home is about setting expectations and following through, not about being the loudest voice in the room. My kids respect me more when I'm calm and consistent than when I'm yelling.
