For your 16 year old into woodworking, a really nice set of chisels or a new tool they've been wanting. Something quality they'll use regularly and actually appreciate the upgrade.
For the baseball player, a batting lesson from a local pro or coach is clutch. Teenagers remember who helped them get better at something they care about.
Baseball glove for the 14 year old if he doesn't have a really nice one yet. Not just equipment, but pick a brand he likes and go higher end than you normally would. He'll notice.

Your instinct to avoid junk is spot on. Quality over quantity always. For woodworking maybe a nice dust mask or quality worklight if he needs one, something practical he uses every time he's out there.
