Does being a gentleman mean letting people walk over you?

Had a situation at work where I was trying to be respectful and let a coworker take credit for something we did together. My old man told me that's not being a gentleman, that's being a fool. He said real honor means standing up for yourself and speaking truth. Now I'm second guessing what being classy actually means. Does anyone else struggle with this balance?

This is the real question right here. I struggle with this balance all the time at work. You can be a good person AND stand up for yourself. Those aren't mutually exclusive.
I think you gotta draw the line somewhere. Opening doors and being kind is one thing, but letting someone steal your work? Nah. That's not being a gentleman, that's being a pushover.
