How do you teach leadership without sounding preachy?

I want my boys to understand that being a leader means serving others, not ruling over them. My dad led by example and I'm trying to do the same but sometimes I feel like I need to actually say it out loud. Do you guys just show them through actions or do you have these conversations directly? Want to make sure they understand the weight of it.

One thing that helped me was having them help out without making it a big deal about leadership. Like we'll volunteer as a family and I just let them see what service looks like naturally. No speeches needed.

This is something I've been thinking about a lot with my two boys. I think the key is showing them through your own actions first. My dad led by example more than lectures, and that stuck with me way more than anything he said.

I struggle with this too. I've found asking questions works better than telling. When my oldest makes a decision I ask 'how do you think that affects the people around you?' Gets them thinking without the preach factor.
