How do you teach respect without being a pushover?

Got a question for you fellas. My 14 year old has been talking back lately and I want to correct it but I don't want him thinking he can't express himself either. Where's the line between being firm and being overbearing? My dad was strict but I could never talk to him about anything real. Don't want to repeat that.
