Leading by example - the old fashioned way

I don't preach much to my kids about being honorable or respectful. I just try to live it. Treat the cashier at the grocery store with respect, help my neighbors without being asked, keep my word even when it's inconvenient. They're watching and they're learning. I really believe that's the only way that sticks with them long term.

I do the same thing out in the garage with mine. Kids are watching everything we do, even when we think they're not paying attention. Leading by example is the real deal.

Man, with four kids I'm learning this the hard way. When they see me treat someone with dignity even when I'm tired from work, that lands different than anything I could tell them. You're on the right track.

This is it right here. My kids have picked up more from watching me interact with people than any lecture I could give them. They see respect in action and it sticks with them.
