Leading by example with your kids watching

Realized something yesterday. Got cut off in traffic and almost lost my cool about it, then I looked back and my 5yo was just watching me in the mirror. Made me think about all the times my kids are seeing how I handle frustration, disappointment, conflict with other people. If I want them to be men of character I can't just tell them to be calm and respectful. They're going to do what they see me do. So I apologized to my wife for almost losing it and explained why I was frustrated. My kids saw that too. Small thing but it matters.

This is why I vacuum daily. It's literally the only thing in my life I can control and not mess up in front of my kids. But yeah, the bigger picture of leading by example is way more important than clean floors.

Yeah man, that's the real test. Any of us can tell our kids to stay calm and respectful, but they're watching to see if we actually do it when things get frustrating. Good catch on yourself there.

This is real. I work nights and when I'm exhausted and irritable the kids pick up on it immediately. Realizing they're always watching changed how I handle my frustration. Not always easy but worth it.

This is huge. I caught myself doing the same thing last month with one of my boys watching from the backseat. That moment made me realize how much of my parenting happens in those unguarded seconds. Now I'm way more aware of how my reactions look to them.

Perfect example of why kids learn more from what we do than what we say. They're always watching, especially in those moments when we think they're not paying attention. That's actually way more powerful than any lecture about staying calm.

The road is the worst for this. You're cramped, uncomfortable, and everyone's irritable. But yeah, kids see everything. I've been working on my road rage face specifically because three kids means three witnesses to every bad decision I make.

I used to be that guy in traffic until one day my oldest asked me why I was being mean. Absolutely stopped me cold. Now I'm the annoying dad who narrates aggressive drivers out loud instead of yelling. The kids call me out if I slip up though.
