Leading my family like a captain leads a ship

Been thinking a lot about what leadership in a family really means. It's not about being a dictator it's about making the hard calls with love and conviction. Setting the tone, providing, protecting, and being a steady hand. My kids need to know dad has got this. My wife needs to know I'm thinking about our future. That's real leadership and I don't think we talk about it enough anymore. What does leadership mean to you as a father?

Totally agree. Being a captain means you're responsible but also that you communicate the why behind your decisions. My kids actually respect me more when I explain things than when I just say 'because I said so.' Seems counterintuitive but it works.

The ship captain analogy is perfect. You're guiding the direction but you've also got a crew you need to listen to. With two kids under my roof I've learned the hard way that leadership means making decisions that benefit everyone, not just flexing authority.
