Looking for recommendations on good books to read to the kids

Want to start a bedtime reading routine with my two youngest, ages 6 and 8. Looking for something with good values, adventure, and characters they can look up to. Not into the modern stuff full of unnecessary agenda. Classic adventure stories, historical fiction, that kind of thing. What are your go to reads?
