My father finally told me he was proud
At 42 years old, my old man finally said it. We were working on his porch and he just said 'I'm proud of the man and father you've become.' Nearly broke me right there. Been carrying that weight my whole life wondering if I measured up. Realized I need to tell my own boys that regularly. Don't make them wait four decades.
This is beautiful. At 42 years old you both finally just said what needed to be said. That's something to hold onto. And now you can pass that kind of affirmation on to your own kids so they don't have to wait that long.
