My father taught me to lead by example

Dad never had to yell much. He just showed us how a man was supposed to act. How he treated people when nobody was watching. How he admitted when he was wrong. How he took care of his responsibilities without complaining. I'm trying to do the same for my sons. The old ways of just demanding respect don't work anymore if you haven't earned it first.

That's the real deal right there. My oldest is starting to notice how I handle things when I'm frustrated, and it's made me way more conscious about my reactions. Your dad sounds like he nailed it.

Man, that hits different. With four kids at different ages, I'm constantly aware they're watching. The yelling doesn't work anyway - showing them the right way just sticks better.

This is exactly what I'm trying to do with my two. Not perfect by a long shot, but I figure if they see me mess up and own it, that means something. That's the foundation right there.
