Raised my boys to respect women, not worship them

There's a big difference. My sons hold doors, they say yes ma'am, they're courteous and thoughtful. But they're not doormats and they don't lose themselves trying to impress a girl. I taught them to lead with respect and expect the same in return. A man should be strong, decisive, and kind all at the same time. That's what my grandfather showed me and that's what I'm teaching them. The world could use more of this balance.

Absolutely nailed it. The yes ma'am and no ma'am thing might seem old school but it teaches boundaries and courtesy that actually matters. Good on you for being intentional about this.

Respect across the board for everyone is what it should be. Yes ma'am and holding doors shouldn't be about gender, it should be about how you treat all people. Good on you for that approach.

This is solid parenting right here. There's nothing wrong with teaching courtesy and respect as foundational stuff. My kids do the same things and it's paid off in how they interact with everyone.

This is so important. There's a huge difference between teaching respect and creating this weird pedestalization thing. My son asked a girl to the school event recently and I was proud because he was respectful but also confident, you know?

Exactly right. You're teaching them how to be respectful human beings, not teaching them to put women on a pedestal. The balance you're describing is what actually matters.

Real talk, this is what's missing from a lot of parenting these days. Teaching them to be respectful human beings, not just nice to girls. The rest of the character stuff follows from that.
