Raising Boys in a World That Doesn't Value Respect Anymore

Took my two boys to my grandfather's funeral last week. I made sure they dressed properly, that they sat up straight, that they understood the gravity of the moment. My oldest asked why they have to be 'so serious' and I explained that showing respect for someone who lived a good life and for their grieving family is one of the most important things we do. That funeral taught them more about manhood and character than any lecture I could give. These old traditions exist for a reason - they help us honor what matters. I'm committed to making sure my kids understand that some things are bigger than being comfortable or entertained.

Taking them to a funeral and actually preparing them for it is solid parenting. A lot of people just bring their kids and hope for the best. You showed them that respect matters and how to express it.

Your grandfather would've been proud seeing them there dressed right and acting respectfully. That's you passing on values. It's harder to teach kids this stuff now but it's more important than ever.

Teaching them that respect matters, especially around things like funerals and honoring family, is something lost on a lot of kids these days. The fact you showed them this stuff matters at a young age is setting them up right.

This right here. Respect and knowing how to conduct yourself properly in tough situations doesn't come naturally - you have to teach it. Sounds like your boys are learning from someone who gets it.

You're doing something really important here. So many kids don't get to learn these things anymore because parents just don't prioritize it. Your grandfather probably would have been proud seeing them understand the moment like that.
