Raising Sons to Respect Women

Had a tough conversation with my 12 year old about how he speaks to his sister. Told him straight up that real men don't talk down to women or use them. A gentleman protects and respects the women around him, period. Doesn't mean being weak, means being strong enough to lift others up. He's getting it now. Just wanted to throw this out there for the guys raising boys. They're soaking up what we teach them about respect.

That conversation is so important. I had something similar with my boys around that age. It's awkward but necessary. The fact that you're having it means you're doing it right.

Good on you for having that conversation early. My oldest is 8 and I'm already trying to instill this stuff. How'd he take it? Did he get defensive or was he receptive?

Respect. That's the foundation of everything. My old man did the same thing with me and honestly it stuck. Sounds like your 12 year old is lucky to have someone who actually cares enough to have the tough conversations instead of just letting it slide.

This is so important. I've got three kids and honestly the boys need to hear this from their dad more than anywhere else. Respect starts at home and if they see it's okay to talk disrespectfully to their sister then that's what they'll think is normal. What specifically was he doing?

This is so important. I'm making a mental note to have this exact conversation with my son in a few years. The earlier they learn this the better.
