Respect starts with respecting yourself

Just read a thread about honor and it got me thinking. Can't command respect from your kids or family if you don't respect yourself. For me that means keeping my word, staying in shape, not making excuses, and admitting when I'm wrong. A real man isn't afraid to say I made a mistake. That's strength not weakness.

100% this. My kids notice everything, and they respect me more when I'm actually taking care of myself and standing by what I say. Setting that example on the soccer field carries over at home too.

Absolutely. My son picks up on when I'm cutting corners or making excuses. When I hold myself to a standard, he naturally wants to do the same.

That's the foundation right there. Can't teach my boys about integrity if I'm not living it myself. Self-respect is everything.
