Had to pull my oldest aside yesterday. He interrupted his grandfather three times at dinner. I told him that's not how we conduct ourselves. You listen to your elders, you don't talk over them, you address them respectfully. I know some people think this is outdated but it's basic courtesy. Teaching your kids to respect their elders isn't mean, it's necessary.
That's exactly the kind of lesson that sticks with them. We talk a lot about listening when we're out on family hikes - sometimes the best conversations happen when everyone's actually paying attention to each other.

How did he take it? My oldest usually gets defensive when I call him out in front of people but I'm not backing down on the respect thing.

I've had to do this same conversation with my boys. They're at that age where they think their ideas need to come out immediately. Sitting down after and explaining why listening matters helped more than just the correction.
