Southern mama raised me right but how do I pass it on?

Grew up where men opened doors, said yes ma'am and no ma'am, stood up when a lady entered the room. My mama was strict about it but it took. Now I got a 7 year old and a 9 year old and the world keeps telling them that stuff is old fashioned. Their mother doesn't care much about manners either. I'm not going to force it on them but I want them to understand that respect and courtesy matter. Anyone else feel like they're swimming upstream on this stuff?

Southern raised too and I get the appeal but I'd gently say that modern gentlemanliness might look a bit different. Teaching respect, kindness, and consideration matters way more than the specific customs. Let your kids make it their own version.
