Southern values are worth protecting

Just moved to the south after living up north my whole life and I'm noticing something. People here still value courtesy, they still say yes sir and no ma'am, people help their neighbors without asking. It's refreshing. Feels like the rest of the country lost something we desperately need. Not sure if I'm romanticizing it or if this is real, but I want to raise my kids with these values. Anyone else feel like we need more of this?

Southern values are cool but I think you'll find good and bad people everywhere. Been up north my whole life and Denver too now. What matters is teaching your kids to treat people right, no matter where you live.

The hospitality thing down south is real. My wife grew up in Memphis and I've learned a lot just from watching how her family does things. It rubs off on the kids too which I think is valuable.

What specifically are you noticing? I grew up with Southern values and moved around a lot. Some of it is genuine hospitality and community, some of it is just how people were raised. Both have their place.

I get what you're saying about manners and respect. Moved to Boise from California a few years back and there's definitely a different pace down here. People actually say hi on the street instead of just staring at their phones.

Welcome to the South. You'll notice it most in how people treat their word and how they handle conflict - way more indirect but also more genuine in some ways. Give it time, you'll start to appreciate both the good parts and understand the frustrations.
