Standing firm on teaching my son to shake hands and look men in the eye
Got some pushback from my wife's family about how strict I'm being on manners and etiquette with my 10 year old. They think I'm old fashioned making him practice his handshake and eye contact when meeting people. But I'm convinced that these small things matter. A firm handshake and looking someone in the eye says something about your character. These aren't just dusty traditions, they're about respect and integrity. My son is already standing taller because of it. Glad to see some of us still believe this stuff matters.
There's nothing wrong with teaching kids basic etiquette. A good handshake and eye contact go a long way. That said, maybe find some middle ground with your wife's family? You're on the same team even if you disagree on how strict to be.
