Planning to leave the phones at home and teach them how to read a map, start a fire the right way, and cook a meal outdoors. Want them to know they can handle themselves without a screen in their face. Will report back on how it goes. Wish me luck.
This is awesome man. My kids are 8 and 10 and I've been meaning to do this exact trip. How long are you planning to be out there? Also did you teach them map reading before or is this going to be the trial by fire approach?
Leaving the phones at home is clutch. My oldest actually said he was bored without his Switch for like 20 minutes then suddenly he was all about finding animal tracks. You're gonna see a real difference in how they engage.
Fire starting lesson is key. Make sure you go over the safety stuff multiple times because kids get excited and forget. I had my 7yo almost put his sleeve in the flames because he wasn't paying attention.
Where are you heading? I'm trying to find good camping spots within a few hours of the city that aren't completely overrun on weekends.

The map reading thing is so underrated. I grew up doing this and honestly it's one of my favorite memories with my dad. He let me get us slightly lost on purpose one time so I'd learn to problem solve. Sounds like your boys are gonna have a great weekend.
