Sometimes being a good dad means being the bad guy. My 15 year old wanted to quit football because practice is early and he'd rather sleep in and hangout. I told him he made a commitment and he's seeing it through. Yeah he hates me right now but he'll understand later that real men keep their word. Anyone else dealing with this?
Props for pushing back on that. Fifteen year olds don't always see past the current moment. If he's a good football player and it builds character, sometimes they need a parent to say no to the easy way out. That's tough love done right.
My oldest tried the same thing his sophomore year and I told him the same thing you're probably telling your kid. Sometimes you finish what you start. It was unpopular at the time but he thanked me later.
The hard road builds character though. Not always what kids want to hear but it's what they need. Sounds like you're thinking about who he'll become, not just who he is right now.
