Teaching my boy to be a man

My 8 year old is getting soft. He cries over everything, doesn't want to do chores, complains about practice. I grew up doing hard work and my dad didn't coddle me. I'm trying to teach him that being a man means toughening up and handling your responsibilities without complaint. Sometimes I have to be hard on him but I know it's for his own good. Anyone else raising their sons with real standards?

Man, I get it but I'd pump the brakes a little. My kids cry too and it doesn't mean they're soft, they're just 8. Some of my best moments with them have come when I actually listened instead of pushing harder.

Chores are good, practice is good, but maybe meet him halfway? I found my boys respond better when I'm doing something WITH them instead of just telling them to tough it out. Backyard time changed everything for me.
