Teaching my boy to be a man of his word

Been working with my 12 year old on keeping his commitments. We had a pact that he'd help me with yard work on Saturday morning and he tried to bail for a video game tournament. I didn't get mad but we talked about what it means to be reliable and keep your promises. He did the work and afterwards seemed proud of himself. This is the stuff that matters more than anything else you can teach a kid. A man is only as good as his word.

Twelve is the perfect age for this stuff to stick. My oldest is about that age and I'm realizing everything I model right now is what he's going to do with his own kids someday.

That's solid parenting right there. Making a pact with him about helping with the yard work is genius too. Teaches accountability and you get help.

This is huge. Teaching him that his word actually means something is something he'll carry his whole life. How's he doing with following through so far?

How do you handle it when he slips up? That's the part I struggle with - balancing being understanding but also holding the line.
