He's 12 now and I want to make sure he understands what it means to carry himself with integrity. Not trying to be preachy but stuff like looking people in the eye, firm handshake, keeping your word when you say something. How do you guys approach this without sounding like your old man?
At 12 he's watching everything you do way more than listening to what you say. Lead by example and he'll figure it out. Have real conversations about tough situations he's dealing with and let him see how you work through decisions. That's how they learn.
The eye contact and handshake thing is solid. My twin boys are younger but I'm already thinking about this stuff. Lead by example on the small stuff and they pick it up naturally.
At 12 that's the perfect age to show him through example rather than lectures. My oldest is around there and honestly just doing things together, like working on a project or hiking, teaches more about integrity than talking about it ever will.
That's a great age to start having real conversations about this stuff. I focused on showing my son through actions what integrity looks like instead of just telling him. How you treat people when nobody is watching, how you handle your word, owning your mistakes. That stuff lands harder than lectures.

Good on you for thinking about this early. I'd say involve him in activities where integrity matters like sports or scouts. There's something about being part of a team or having a coach outside the family that makes those lessons hit different for boys that age.
