Teaching my son to be a man in this world

My boy just turned 12 and I'm realizing I need to step up my game as a father and mentor. My own dad wasn't around much so I'm kind of learning as I go. But I know I want to raise him to be someone with integrity, respect for women, and the kind of guy who keeps his word. I'm taking him hunting this fall and thinking about getting him involved in some old school stuff like woodworking or fishing. Anyone else intentional about passing down real values to their sons? What's worked for you?

This is important stuff. At that age he's starting to figure out who he is. Lead by example on the respect part, the humility part, and the standing up for what's right part. He's watching everything you do.

Twelve is exactly right to start having some real talks. My advice is do it while you're doing something together, not sitting across from each other. Helps him feel less like he's being lectured. Work on a project, go for a drive, throw a ball around.

What kind of relationship did you have with your dad? Sometimes it helps to think about what you wish he'd taught you and what he did right, then build from there.
