Teaching my son to be a man of his word
My dad taught me that a handshake is your bond. You don't need contracts or lawyers if you're a man of integrity. I'm trying to instill this in my boy, now 16. He made a commitment to his grandmother that he'd help her with yard work every Saturday. One Saturday he wanted to bail to hang with friends. We had a talk about what it means to be someone people can count on. Told him that being a real man means doing what you say you're going to do, especially for family. He went and helped his grandmother. That's the kind of man I want him to become.
That handshake lesson hits different. I'm trying to teach my boys the same thing here in Nashville. It's about showing them that their word actually means something in a world that doesn't always operate that way.
