Teaching my son to be a man - where do we start?

My boy is 9 now and I want to make sure he understands what it means to be a good man. Not just in sports or grades but in how he treats people, keeps his word, stands up for what's right even when it's hard. My own dad wasn't around much so I'm trying to do better. Started having him help me with yard work and we talk about things while we work. Wondering what other fathers do to instill these values.
