Teaching My Son to Give a Firm Handshake and Look a Man in the Eye

Been working with my 12 year old on handshake technique and eye contact when meeting adults. My dad taught me this when I was young and honestly it's served me well in business and life. Started with him practicing on me, then had him shake hands with some of my buddies at the gym. You should've seen how their faces lit up when he gave them a proper firm grip and said 'nice to meet you sir'. He's getting it now. Thinking of teaching him next about holding a door open for ladies and waiting for them to sit before he does. These things matter.

This is exactly right. The handshake and eye contact combo says everything about a person's character. You're setting him up well.

Great move teaching him this early. With soccer schedules and bedtime wars, I sometimes miss the character stuff, but this is the kind of thing that actually makes a difference when he walks into a room at 16 or 20.

This is solid stuff. My kid climbs everything and has zero fear, but I'm definitely gonna work on the handshake and eye contact thing with him as he gets older. It's those little confidence builders that stick with them.

My dad taught me the same thing and I'm doing it with my boy now. It's one of those small things that actually matters so much. Good on you for passing that on.
