Teaching respect and manners in a disrespectful generation

My kids still say yes sir and no sir, they shake hands with adults, they look people in the eye, and they say thank you. My wife worried this was old fashioned but you should see how adults respond to them. People actually treat them with more respect and trust. I don't think respect is outdated, I think it's more important now than ever. Anyone else putting in the work to raise kids with actual manners?

Yes sir and no sir goes a long way. I'm teaching my daughter the same thing and people constantly comment on her manners. It's not about being old-fashioned, it's about respect for others.

How old are your kids now? I'm trying to figure out when to start really emphasizing these things with mine. The eye contact thing especially seems important but I don't want to push too hard too early.

This right here. People act like teaching manners is somehow restricting kids but honestly it's the opposite. My kids have better relationships with adults and authority figures because they know how to interact respectfully. It's a life skill.

The handshake thing is gold. I started teaching my oldest that at 6 and now at 9 he does it automatically when he meets someone. It's one of those small habits that actually sticks.

This is real. My kids do this too and it opens doors socially and academically. Teachers actually treat kids differently when they have basic manners and respect. Not saying it's fair but it's real.

Respect and manners are not old fashioned, they're foundational. My kids do the same and you should see how adults react when they shake hands and make eye contact. It opens doors. Keep doing what you're doing.

How are you getting them to actually stick with this? My kids are the same age and I'm trying but it's an uphill battle with everything else coming at them.

This is something I'm working on with my kids too. The yes sir/no sir thing was weird at first but I realized it's actually teaching them to be intentional with how they communicate. Props for sticking with it when it's easier not to.
