Teaching respect for elders the old way
My kids know to stand when grandpa enters the room. They address him as sir and listen without interrupting. My wife thought I was being too strict but then her own mother commented on how respectful our kids are compared to her other grandkids. There's something about teaching kids to honor their elders. It matters. We've lost that somewhere.
We do something similar. My kids know to show respect when older family comes over. It's not about being stiff though, just acknowledging that elders have earned respect. Grandpa appreciates it and my kids get it.
