Teaching respect through actions

Took my kids to the grocery store and watched a dad let his kids disrespect the checkout lady, talking back and being rude. Really bothered me. I made sure mine said please and thank you and looked her in the eye. Later I told them that how you treat people when nobody important is watching shows who you really are. That's how my dad taught me and I'm passing it on. It's not complicated but it matters.
