The art of saying no without being rude

My neighbor asked me to help him move this weekend but I already committed to helping at church and spending time with my kids. Instead of making excuses, I just told him straight up that I had prior commitments and offered to help him the following weekend. He respected that more than if I'd flaked out or made up some story. Being a man of your word means being honest about what you can and can't do. Honoring your commitments is more important than trying to please everyone.

Respect to you for honoring both commitments instead of half-assing it. That's the kind of integrity our kids notice and remember.
