Took my kids to dinner last night and the table next to us had teenagers on their phones the entire meal. Not talking to their parents at all. Just swiping and scrolling. Its depressing to see. We've made it a rule at our table, phones stay in pockets. Family time is sacred. Might be old fashioned but I don't care.
This hits different when you realize you're becoming that dad who notices this stuff. I used to roll my eyes at my dad for complaining about kids on phones and now here I am doing the same thing.
Yeah I saw a family at Applebee's last week where the dad was literally the only one not staring at a screen. He looked miserable. I get that phones are everywhere but there's something about putting the thing down for 20 minutes to actually talk to your kids.
To be fair some of those teenagers probably have phones because their parents insisted they keep them on in case of emergency. But yeah the whole table thing is rough to watch.

My parents used to have a strict no phones at the table rule and honestly I hated it then but now I do the same thing with my family. The difference in conversation quality is night and day.
