What does leadership mean in 2024?

Been reading some old books about southern gentlemen and traditional family structures and it got me thinking. Modern culture tells us leadership means being tough and commanding. But the men I respect most are the ones who lead through example and character. Who listen to their families and make decisions based on what's right not what's easy. How do you guys balance being a strong leader with being present and humble?

I think leadership is just being reliable and honest and listening to people. Don't need a book from 1950 to figure that out.

Southern gentleman stuff has legs but it needs an update. Respect, responsibility, treating people well - that's eternal. The specific rituals change but the foundation is solid.

There's some good ideas in those old books about personal responsibility and standing your ground, but a lot of it doesn't apply to modern parenting. You kind of have to pick and choose.

What books are you reading? I'm curious because there's definitely a difference between toxic traditional stuff and actual character building. Some of the old frameworks are worth revisiting if you're thoughtful about it.

Leadership in 2024 means showing up for your kids and treating your family with respect. That's about it really. The old southern gentleman stuff is cool but it's gotta actually translate to how you treat people.

Leadership in 2024 probably means showing your kids how to be thoughtful and intentional instead of just reactive. The old books have some good stuff in them but the core is timeless - take care of people around you.
