What's the best way to discipline your kids without losing their respect?

My youngest messed up at school today and I need to set a consequence but I want to do it the right way. I never want my kids to fear me but I need them to understand that actions have consequences. I remember my old man would explain WHY something was wrong, not just yell about it. Anyone have advice on keeping that balance between being firm and being fair?
